Brett Samson of Peterview was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at just eight-years-old, and has been raising money to support people in similar situations ever since.

Brett Sampson from Peterview has been fundraising for people with Type 1 diabetes since he was nine years old, following his own diagnosis at age eight. Using proceeds from his family’s small farm and organizing annual athletic events, Brett has raised over $40,000 to help those who struggle to afford diabetic medical supplies, particularly in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Brett’s work is in collaboration with Glenn’s Helping Hand, a local charity, and he has become an advocate for better coverage for diabetic supplies. His family is actively involved in the fundraising, and Brett continues to combine his interests in farming and sports to support others living with diabetes.

Teen raises over $40K to help others with Type 1 diabetes

It's a mini firm with a big heart, and for Brett Sampson of Peterview, it's a way for him to help people deal with diabetes, a disease he was diagnosed with at age eight. Over here on the far bed, we have carrots, right here we have cabbages, right here we have cucumbers, here is where we keep our turkeys, broilers, and one year we had a pig here. Over here we have sugar snap peas, and we have some Atlantic giant pumpkins. Brett Sampson was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes during the pandemic. At age nine, he started raising money for those in a similar situation. We sat down with Brett, and we just didn't want it to be, you know, this is a disease that you have, and, you know, this is your life, we wanted to kind of, not to be cliche, but life gave us lemons, we wanted to make lemonade. The farm stand that Brett used to make some pocket money became the economic engine for his fundraising. He also does an annual run-slash-bike ride to raise money, all in aid of people with diabetes. They are teamed up with Mount Pearl-based Glenn's Helping Hand. We had the same mindset and philosophy, and, you know, what we wanted to do was support, and we collaborated, they made us board members, and we just hit the ground running. It was to help people in Newfoundland and Labrador that don't have the best insurance to get a Dexcom and their diabetic medical supplies. Now 13, Brett is a multi-sport athlete who is an expert in nutrition. Physically active to me is like, well, it helps me regulate my sugars very well. Like, it helps me, like, exercise, makes them stay regulated. But if I just sat around all day, my sugars would be super high, and it helps me, like, mentally, too. An added bonus is getting to work on the fundraising with his parents. Just us being together and doing stuff together as a family, it makes you feel really nice that you're able to help out others, doing something that you love. It helps us together, and helps us become better as a family, and it's enjoyable. We kind of wanted to do something that we enjoyed, which was farming and mountain biking and all that, so we just started off small with a mountain bike ride, and then we sold some vegetables, and Brett donated a major portion of that to the foundation, and it just spiraled from there. You're always busy. It definitely made us busier, but it's a little more rewarding for us when we know that what we are doing, every penny of this is being spent on some type of supplies to help somebody who doesn't have the money to buy it themselves. Just as the diabetes is part of his life, so too are the fundraisers. He's advocating for coverage for children, for adults, helping fundraise. Anytime we're at an event, somebody comes up to him and asks him about the story, he'll tell the story. I think back to the things that I had to worry and think about when I was that age, he's definitely taken on bigger responsibilities at a younger age than I would have. Well, it has changed a lot, yes, but it's not stopping me at all. I feel like if it was me that was diagnosed, I'd be a crooked old man, and I'd be laid on the couch and crooked with the world, mad at the world, but he's embraced it. He's done so much, he's spoke to so many, he's advocated so much, and he's a rock star. The fundraising and activities will continue for Brett Stanford Diabetes, and there's no plans on slowing down.
