Teachers gathered in downtown Edmonton to try and get the attention of Premier Danielle Smith, who was also downtown giving a state of the province address. Teachers are bracing for the likelihood of being forced back to work when the next session of the legislature resumes.

Thousands of teachers rallied outside Rogers Place in Edmonton, calling for increased funding and smaller class sizes. The demonstration coincided with Premier Danielle Smith's state of the province address, where she discussed the ongoing negotiations between the Alberta Teachers Association (ATA) and the government. 

Teachers and students have been out of class for over a week with no resolution in sight. The government is now considering back-to-work legislation if an agreement is not reached, a move that has raised concerns among teachers about their right to strike and the impact on their working conditions and students' education.

Inside, Danielle Smith gave her state of the province address discussing the economy, industry and the ongoing negotiations between the Alberta Teachers Association and the government. It had not been negotiated and the teachers rejected it and so we've just asked the ATA leadership to go back to the members and find out what it might take to get to a reasonable and fair deal. Students and teachers have been out of class for over a week with no end in sight. The ATA says it recently gave the province an updated proposal with the finance minister saying he was hoping for something more reasonable and now the province is looking at forcing teachers back to work. I think the measure is, is it beginning to cause irreparable harm and everybody will have a different interpretation of when that is. I can tell you that we have in the past had to cancel diploma exams when kids are missing more than two weeks so I think that becomes in the realm of irreparable harm. Smith says the legislature returns on October 23rd and her government may look at bringing back to work legislation into effect the following week which is a disappointing reality for teachers. If they take away our rights to strike if they take away our charter freedoms to just strong arm us back and force a deal down our throat I don't know how we're gonna feel. I don't know, I don't know how many of my colleagues will go back, right? We're kind of at a breaking point. We're overworked. I don't know, I'm scared to see what will happen if they do that. But until then teachers say they will continue to fight for smaller class sizes and a better education system for both them and the students they teach. Sarah Reid, CBC News, Edmonton.
