Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney is commemorating 100 years since giraffes first arrived at the zoo in 1926. The milestone celebration included centenarian and long-time donor Peter Howard, who has supported giraffe conservation efforts for decades and was given a special opportunity to interact with the animals.

The zoo showcased its new giraffe barn, which stands alongside the original heritage-listed structure built in 1924. Taronga's giraffe program has played a significant role in breeding efforts across Australasia, with 21 giraffes at its Dubbo facility and four at Taronga Zoo, continuing a legacy that spans a century.

I suppose everyone is sort of fascinated by such a tall animal, I mean incredible to look at them. Peter was just one when giraffes first arrived here in 1926 and after years of helping fund conservation efforts, he's getting a once in a lifetime opportunity. This one was magnificent how you could actually put it on their tongue and you could see saliva inside their mouth, they were really excited about the carrots. Also stepping behind the scenes into the new and improved giraffe barn. The amount of money that's gone into here is unbelievable. Which sits directly behind its heritage listed predecessor. Over 100 years old, built back in 1924 and when giraffe moved here in 1926, it's still here with them. They got a bit of an upgrade, we've got that nice connection to our history. Taronga's giraffe legacy stretches far beyond the harbour. Taronga has a very significant role in the breeding program of giraffe here in Australasia. We've actually welcomed the 65th calf here at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo. Where 21 giraffes live and four here at Taronga. We have Jimmy Yoo who's just beside us here, we also have Ebo, Kito and Zarafa. They're part of the ungulate family, the hoofed animal family. They're certainly one of my favourites. And it's no surprise giraffes are a favourite animal here at the zoo. I mean who wouldn't want to see this 20 inch tongue up close and personal. From towering necks to timeless connections, Taronga's giraffes are still standing tall 100 years on. Emma Olsen, 10 News.
