Ayat Masalmi is a refugee from Syria, living in Jordan. The 25-year-old is a widow and a mother who now doesn't have any source of income. The last time she saw her husband was in May, before he set off on a journey in search of a better life for his family. When the smugglers took him from Benghazi to Tobruk, he called me to tell me that everything was fine. That was the last time we spoke. Mohammed is among those missing and feared dead in a shipwreck off the coast of Greece in June. It was one of the worst migrant boat disasters in the Mediterranean. At first he did not want to go, but then he realized it was the only way to secure a future for our children. Syrian refugees in Jordan have few choices. Their economic and social vulnerabilities have been aggravated by declining international support. The UN agency responsible for refugees says this has come at a human cost. UNHCR is observing that more and more refugees take dangerous routes towards Europe, including through Libya, and then take on the dangerous journey on boats to Europe. And we've seen this number on the rise. And what is really heartbreaking is that those cases that we analyzed have lived here for more than 10 years. So they must have lost the belief in a life in Jordan. Jordan has repeatedly said it does not have the capacity to cater for the roughly 1.3 million Syrian refugees already in the country. Officials had hoped re-engagement with President Bashar al-Assad would leave to refugees returning home. But so far Damascus has not facilitated the process. Instead, Syrians say they face uncertainty, and not just in Jordan. Deportations are increasing in other countries that neighbor Syria. What choices do Syrians have? Make the dangerous journey to Europe or return to Syria, where there are no services, no jobs? It's why Mohammed took the risk. I always wonder what happened to Mohammed. Was he hungry, thirsty, afraid? What did he feel as he was drowning? Mohammed was not the first Syrian refugee to disappear at sea. He's unlikely to be the last. Zainab Khudur, Al Jazeera.
