Syria's interior minister says the protest movement aims to sow chaos and discord and that one of the dead was a member of security forces. The protests were called by Sheikh Hizal Hizal, a high-ranking Alawite cleric who has risen in prominence in the past year. The coming to power of Ahmad al-Shara's Islamist government has left many among Syria's religious and ethnic minorities uneasy. The authorities are trying to reassure Syrians of their ability to keep the peace and unify the country after more than 13 years of civil war. But they refuse to put in place a federal system that Alawites, who say it would offer them greater protection, are calling for.
