Sweden has abandoned two centuries of military non-alignment as it recently became the newest member of NATO. The country's military has been boosting its preparedness since Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea by reintroducing limited conscription in 2017 and reopening a garrison on the Baltic Sea island of Gotland in 2018. Sweden has also massively increased defense spending.

Just like its neighbor Finland, Sweden has put an end to its traditional neutrality and has just joined NATO. Unthinkable still a few years ago. In the heart of the Baltic Sea, the strategic island of Gotland. It's located only 300 kilometers away from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. Sweden is sending their conscripts and troops and is re-militarizing the island. Troops there are training in artillery and on Leopard 2 battle tanks. On Wednesday, Sweden's foreign minister addressed parliament saying everything needed to be done to counter destabilization attempts by Russia. Sweden is sending more help also to Ukraine. 630 million euros worth of military aid. This comes after it has already provided Kyiv with dozens of armored vehicles, some Leopard 2 battle tanks and anti-missile defense systems.
