Abortion opponents want the high court to ratify a ruling from a conservative federal appeals court that would limit access to a medication called mifepristone, which was used in nearly two-thirds of abortions last year. The case comes two years after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Mifepristone's legal status and availability are at the center of this judicial review, coming two years after the landmark ruling where the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. This earlier decision marked a significant shift in the country's approach to abortion rights, setting the stage for the current case that could further alter the landscape of reproductive health and rights in the United States.

The major case involves the drug Mifepresto, which was approved back in 2000. Pro-life groups are suing to limit access to the drug, claiming it's unsafe, citing several studies. Abortion supporters say lifting restrictions could set a precedent on how drugs are approved and affect the abortion drug's availability. The case could be a big deal because if the court even sides with the Fifth Circuit essentially saying that the FDA didn't have the authority to lift restrictions on access to the drug in 2016 and 2021, that would render pretty much all the doses of Mifeprestone on the market potentially misbranded and mislabeled. So Mifeprestone is taken with another drug to perform medicated abortions, which account for more than 60% of abortions nationwide.
