Since April 2023, ongoing conflict in Sudan has severely disrupted essential services, with the education sector among the hardest hit. Fourteen million out of seventeen million school-aged children were forced out of class after fighting broke out between the army and paramilitary rapid support forces.

Despite the army regaining control of Khartoum in March, significant damage remains, particularly to university facilities. The University of Khartoum and its graduates are now leading efforts to clean and rebuild campuses, aiming to resume teaching as the city stabilizes.

The fighting that has gripped Sudan since April 2023 has devastated most essential services. The education system was one of the first casualties. Soon after the army and paramilitary rapid support forces started battling for control, 14 million of the 17 million school-aged children were forced out of class. UNICEF has warned Sudan is becoming the region's worst education crisis. Officials say it's been a struggle to rebuild. Even after the army regained control of the capital in March. Khartoum was severely damaged and some of the classrooms and buildings here in the university were completely destroyed. Many of the teaching facilities in the history faculty, the geography faculty and others were damaged. The University of Khartoum is among several institutions cleaning up its campus in preparation for teaching to resume. Some of its graduates have joined in the reconstruction efforts. They hope that as the capital starts to stabilize, they too can start building a new future.
