Sudan's military leadership announced the withdrawal of its forces from Al-Fashir, the last government stronghold in western Darfur, in an effort to protect civilians from what they described as systematic destruction and killings by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Activists and humanitarian groups confirmed that RSF fighters have taken control of the base, signaling a major development in the conflict that has affected Sudan since April 2023.

Military chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan stated that the decision was made to save civilian lives, but also vowed to retaliate for those killed in the violence. Despite the withdrawal, civilians remaining in Al-Fashir continue to face significant risks as the conflict persists.

Sudan's military chief says commanders in the war-torn city of Al-Fashar made the decision to withdraw in order to spare civilians from what it describes as systematic destruction and killing at the hands of the Rapid Support Forces, RSF. Everyone is following what happened in Al-Fashar. Assessingly, the leadership there, including the Security Committee, estimated that they should leave the city due to systematic destruction and killing of civilians it was subjected to. The remarks came as activists and humanitarian groups reported that RSF fighters seized a major army base, the final government stronghold in the western Darfur region, marking a significant turning point in a conflict that has devastated Sudan since April 2023. We are determined to take revenge for all our martyrs and for what happened to our people in Al-Fashar. The crimes that were being committed now and that were committed before in all parts of Sudan in full view and hearing of the world. Withdrawal may have saved lives in the short term, but the civilians trapped inside Al-Fashar, the battle for survival is only beginning.
