The UN Human Rights Chief has expressed concern that many more people remain trapped in the conflict. Since April 2023, the RSF and the Sudanese army have been engaged in a brutal conflict over control of the nation, leading to staggering losses. The World Health Organization estimates that at least 40,000 people have died, with the true numbers likely much higher. In total, around 12 million people have been displaced, and nearly half of the population is currently facing acute food insecurity. Last week marked a significant development as the RSF took control of al-Fashir after 18 months' siege.
