A shooting occurred at a dormitory on the campus of Kentucky State University, resulting in the death of one student and critical injuries to another. Police identified the suspect as Jacob Lee Bard, a 48-year-old from Evansville, Indiana, who is not affiliated with the university.

Authorities responded to reports of gunfire as students were preparing to leave for the holidays. The university, a historically black institution with about 2,200 students, has suspended all classes, exams, and activities for the rest of the week. This marks the second shooting outside the same residence hall in 2023.

A suspect is in jail this morning after a shooting in a college dorm. Now this happened at Kentucky State University on Tuesday. One student is dead and another is in critical condition. Police say Jacob Lee Bard is charged with murder and assault. Schuyler Henry has more on the shooting that has shut down the school. Situation in case you got an active shooter at the Young building. Students at Kentucky State University were getting ready to head home for the holidays when a gunman opened fire on campus Tuesday afternoon. It was on the way back. We was in the car. We heard 5555. That's all we hear. Police say two students were shot. Both were rushed to the hospital or one died. I think they've got in between when officers got to the scene. Campus police had the suspected shooter in custody. He has been identified as 48 year old Jacob Lee Bard of Evansville, IN. Investigators say he is not a student. Police did not release any information on a possible motive. Frankfort police believe this to be an isolated incident, and there are no active safety concerns on campus at this time. Kentucky State University is a public, historically black university with about 2200 students located just miles away from the state capital in Frankfort. This is the second shooting to take place outside of this residence hall. This year in August, the drive by shooter injured two people. It's my first semester has been the second shooting has happened. Doesn't really make you feel real safe. In response to Tuesday's attack, the university has suspended all classes, final exams and campus activities for the rest of the week. For CBS mornings, I'm Skyler Henry.
