Temperatures are dropping after a heat wave in the Northeast, but that cooler weather is coming with more storms in the forecast.

Temperatures have dropped across the northeastern United States following a recent heat wave, but the arrival of cooler air has brought increased storm activity. Areas such as New York City and Portland are experiencing lower temperatures, while regions to the west, including Detroit and Columbus, remain warmer and more humid.

The backdoor cold front has stalled, leading to a contrast in weather conditions across the region. Severe thunderstorms and flash flooding have been reported in parts of New York and Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh, with warnings in effect for several counties. Further storms and rising humidity are expected to continue, increasing the risk of additional thunderstorms and flooding.

Stormy start to the weekend in the Northeast after cooldown

we have some storms on the map. Temperatures are down. We're down to 68 in New York City, 67 up in Portland. Enjoy it. We're still at 91 in Detroit, Michigan. The backdoor cold front has effectively stalled. And while we're a little cooler in Buffalo and Pittsburgh right now, it's because of the thunderstorms. The true air mass that's cooler and drier is farther east. 91, though, in Detroit and in Columbus. This backdoor cold front got hung up over the mountains, and you could see along and east of the spine of the mountains is much colder than it was or cooler than it was. 12 degrees lower than it was 24 hours ago in D. C. But off to the west, we had a storm about 25 hours ago in Columbus, Ohio. So some temporary warming. If we look at those hour by hour contrasts here right now, it's very humid, though, off to the west 72 degree dew point in Charleston, West Virginia. That is air. You could where dew point is 77 in Virginia Beach. That is really, really gooey air out there. Meanwhile, we're dealing with dry air in New York City, and that cooler air mass has rolled in from the east and northeast. So storms being fueled by that high humidity west of the spine of the mountains. But these are not going to survive farther east beyond just showers because we're cooler and more stable, strong and severe thunderstorms continue up to the area near Attica, New York flash flooding an issue near Geneseo and also flash flooding along part of interstate 86 west of only in an east of Jamestown, New York. We're tracking some of those storms. But here we have Pittsburgh zooming in on the downtown area. Here's downtown Pittsburgh. So flash flood warnings are in effect in Pittsburgh right now. There's a severe thunderstorm warning for New Kensington, P. A. And Verona Pennhills, parts of the northeast end of Allegheny County and up in the northern parts of West Moreland County. And then we have some slow moving downpours, bringing a flash flood threat to parts of West Virginia. So still stormy on Friday this evening here into parts of the northeast. But Saturday, the storms ramped back up for more of the crowd across the northeast temperatures, humidity levels rising, leading to more thunderstorms on the map once again tomorrow.
