Powerful storms are set to sweep from Colorado to the Plains and then into the Midwest from Oct. 15-18.

A storm system is currently affecting the central United States, with multiple zones at risk for severe weather. Areas in Wyoming, Colorado, and northern New Mexico are experiencing thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and frequent lightning, which could create hazardous conditions, especially for travelers.

The system is expected to move from the Rockies into the Plains, maintaining the risk of severe weather over several days. The highest potential for severe storms is forecast for Arkansas, with other states such as Texas, Iowa, South Dakota, and New Mexico also under threat as the system progresses.

Storm system targets the central U.S. this week

As we head into this evening, there will be yes, a risk of severe weather across the Rockies especially. So here's the latest on radar. You can see a couple of different areas to watch. We have one zone here, actually two zones now of storm chances across parts of Wyoming. This northern line right there will potentially pose a threat of severe weather, but also the southern cluster here could also produce some severe storms going forward. So we have two separate areas of concern to watch out for, at least in Wyoming here as we head throughout the next couple of hours. Lots of lightning with these storms and I will point out there's even some as I take the lightning off. You can see there's gonna be some heavy rainfall with these storms as well. So even if they're not warned as severe thunderstorms, you definitely want to be caught outside with this. Not only because of the lightning, but there's gonna be some heavy rainfall. There's gonna be some pockets of rainfall that's gonna be heavy enough to where it could obscure your view, even just looking out your car as you're driving. So you definitely want to be caught out on the roads with conditions like this. Another area you don't want to be caught outside is gonna be these storms here that we're tracking across southern Colorado and northern parts of New Mexico. So this is gonna be another zone that we're gonna be watching out for. Taking the lightning off, you can see there's three distinct areas, three distinct storms in this main line that we are primarily watching out for, for the risk of severe weather as we head into this evening and as we head into tonight. So the one thing I will point out, at least on this southern storm, on this cluster of storms here in Colorado, let me go and circle it for you once again. So in this storm, we have a one-hour radar loop on here. At the very beginning of the radar loop, you can see a lot of lightning along this line, right? But over the past couple radar scans, you can see if the intensity of the lightning is, if you look very closely, you can see it's kind of subtly come down. So there's not as much lightning at the end of the loop as there was at the beginning. So this is a, this is a sign, a signal, that this line of storms may be losing some intensity. So we're gonna be watching this very closely here as we head throughout the next couple of hours. But in addition, this is gonna be the latest of what we're tracking, because today's not the only day we're tracking severe weather chances. That area of low pressure you see there moving across southern parts of Idaho, that's what's kicking off this risk of severe weather here for today. And as we head into this evening, from Albuquerque to Rapid City, that's where we're primarily tracking that risk of severe weather. And as of right now, we do have some storms here popping up in this zone. But I also want to point out, even if you were not in this zone of of severe weather, you could still see some severe thunderstorms possible as we head into tonight. It's just that this zone that we have highlighted for you is where conditions will be most favorable for severe thunderstorm development and storms to continue to expand and intensify. Overall here, the storm system is going to slowly work its way from the Rockies to the Plains as we head into tomorrow. So even for your Thursday afternoon, we'll be tracking a risk of severe weather here from the high plains of New Mexico all the way through parts of central and eastern parts of South Dakota. So we'll be watching for multiple days of severe weather, including Friday from Texas up through Iowa. But the highest potential for severe weather will be in the forecast on Saturday, especially across the state of Arkansas.
