Homeowners across the United States are facing increased insurance premiums, with some states seeing particularly steep rises. In California, homeowners insurance rates have surged by 21 percent, especially in fire-prone regions, following recent devastating wildfires. However, California's premiums are not the highest in the nation; Florida leads in insurance costs, followed by Louisiana, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Texas.

These rising costs are changing the landscape of homeownership, making it less stable and more expensive, especially in states frequently affected by natural disasters. Conversely, states such as Vermont, Alaska, New Hampshire, Maine, and Delaware have the lowest homeowners insurance premiums. The data will be featured in CNBC's upcoming Top States for Business study, which factors insurance costs into its cost of living analysis.

States face increasing insurance costs

Let's move on here, just about a week away from the reveal of CNBC's top states for business. And while tariff costs have taken center stage this year, we can't forget about the cost of insurance. Amidst what some are calling a national crisis for that industry. Scott Cohn joins us with that story. He is in one city that is seeing a spike in costs. Of course, Pacific Palisades in Southern California. Scott. That's right, David. And the experts are saying, by the way, that tariffs will factor into all of this because they increase the cost of construction and construction materials. And that's part of what we're dealing with. Pacific Palisades, of course, was the site of that horrific fire in January. Twelve people died, 6800 structures destroyed in Altadena. Another 18 people died and 9000 structures destroyed. They are rebuilding, though, as you can see, to some degree, but not without some incredible cost and beyond the fire zones. Statewide, the online insurance marketplace Insurify is talking about homeowners insurance rising in California. Twenty one percent this year can be even higher in fire prone areas. California premiums, by the way, are not the highest in the nation. In fact, they are not even close. That belongs to Florida, of course, followed by Louisiana, Oklahoma, Colorado and Texas. And those numbers that you look at really change what it means to own a home. It's kind of really eating into the idea of homeownership being a really stable, you know, essentially cost capped long term bet, especially if you live in a state like Florida or California or even Texas. Insurify is helping us with some of the data on homeowners insurance for our top state study. These are the cheapest states, as you can see, Vermont, Alaska, New Hampshire, Maine and Delaware.
