The story centers on eight-year-old Bobo, who grows up in a white family during the last days of Rhodesia's government, reflecting on the complexities of identity and belonging during a time of political upheaval.

Davidtz, who also stars as Fuller's mother in the film, drew on her own experiences growing up in South Africa during apartheid to relate to the material. The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and is scheduled for release in the United States. Davidtz aimed to present the multidimensional nature of the characters and the fractured realities of the era.

After a three-decade career in front of the camera, South African actor Amber Thavitt is making her directorial debut with Don't Let's Go to the Docks tonight. The film follows eight-year-old Bobo who grows up in a white family in the last days of Rhodesia's government. The characters were the first thing. So these fully formed, incredible dimensional characters, which is the actress in me went, oh my God, that would be great to play. So that was the first thing. And then the context, you know, I'm aware all the time of what's going on in the world, what patterns are repeating themselves in the world around us, right? So I knew my South African version of living through a version of a war. And I saw and read in the book the Zimbabwean version. And I thought, it's so similar. It's different, but there's a lot of similarities. And I just thought always at the center of everything, there's a child watching, there's a child experiencing all the wars all over the world. So I just thought there is a a scene. The film is an adaptation of Alexandra Fuller's best-selling 2001 memoir. And Beth Davids said she related to the story, having grown up as a white child in South Africa during apartheid. Davids does not only direct the movie. She also stars as Fuller's mother. The mother is not a likable character. And yet the one possible redeeming factor about her is the fact that she lost children because you think to yourself, they didn't own, they didn't belong there. They came in and they took over a country that wasn't theirs. But her argument, the only argument that holds any water for me was that her children were buried in that soil. So that's why she didn't want to leave. There are much more, you know, nefarious reasons behind what she was holding on to power, people hold on to power. So it's also I was trying to show multiple dimensions of things. You know, I always quote back to saying that the state of the world, the way things are now, everybody's got a side, everybody's got a story. And, you know, you have to take into account how fractured the sort of pyramid of all of these, the prism of all of this is and try and put it together. The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in August 2024. It will be released in the United States on July 11th. Not today, Baba, not today.
