Rising temperatures across the Northeast are resulting in a mix of rain, snow, and ice, with significant snowfall now mostly confined to far northern areas such as Maine and the Green and White Mountains. Ice remains the primary concern for hazardous travel, particularly during the morning commute, as even a trace can cause slick roads and sidewalks.

The current system is expected to be the most impactful for the region, though widespread power outages are not anticipated. Another weather system is forecast to move in later in the week, potentially causing further travel disruptions as precipitation continues across much of the country.

Now I want to start off with our current temperatures because this gives you an idea of why we're talking about these different types of precipitation. Buffalo, Syracuse to Albany, this is the zone where we're talking about that mix of snow, ice, rain because right now Buffalo 37, Syracuse 33, Albany 33 hovering right around that freezing point and that's where we end up with precipitation types mixing around here overall. Now I do want to zoom into radar and clouds give you an idea of how this has been moving into the region because the Great Lakes has been the bigger focus today for all of the impacts but even six hours ago we had the rainfall into western New York even into central Pennsylvania over the last couple of hours. Very scattered in Pennsylvania it's much more widespread further north which means tomorrow New England it'll be much more widespread for you compared to further south. Now I'm showing you the footprint here because it gives you an idea of what your biggest concern is depending on where you are however just because you're in the blue does not mean that you don't get a little bit of icy mix in there as well and the ice really is the big concern that's where we end up with traffic disruptions we end up with crashes possible just dangerous road conditions overall. As far as the rainfall especially where we have the lighter green the showers very scattered not a big impact but just enough to be annoying as we've had system after system after system. Let's time it out on future radar especially because it's really into most of the region by 10 p.m tonight but we're going to stop the clock once again right around your morning commute tomorrow because I mean take a look a messy setup and we'll use Albany as an example here we have the rain but we have some pink mixing in there as well that means you can have slick spots on the roads we all know a little bit of rain that slows things down anyway but you start to get crashes because the ice suddenly you're late to work you're late to school wherever you might be heading not a bad idea to give yourself some extra time to avoid some of this and be able to take it slow. Maine you see the last of this as you tend to throughout the day Wednesday we struggle to get rid of it now we're at Thursday 4 30 p.m our next system already starting to work its way in Jeff's going to break this down more however we'll just finish playing out future radar you can see it's mostly rain for us the backside of this not out of the question to see some snow but mostly further to the west again Jeff will break that down I want to back up a little bit let's break down each type of precipitation with this first system but it is the fact that it's system after system after system that makes this a little bit more impactful overall so as far as the snow it's very far north I mean highlighting the portions of the U.S. it's far northern portions of the region though some of you especially into Maine and then the green and white mountains we'll see three to six inches could get closer to that AccuOther local storm max of a foot of snow the snow isn't the high impact here but of course can lead to some slick spots and travel disruptions like I've been saying it's the ice we're gonna use Portland Maine as an example here because you are in the thick of it I know those numbers do not look too impressive however it just takes a little bit and even looking at our probabilities here it's not out of the question to just get a trace that will still cause problems and especially look at the timeline here right in the middle of the morning commute is just not working in our favor here which is why I'm saying not a bad idea to give yourself some extra time now if you're wondering okay a trace of ice that doesn't sound that bad well when we come to freezing rain especially you're going to get slick spots on the roads and the sidewalks any amount of ice will do that now thankfully we're in the hazardous category we're not talking about disruptive or significant where we're talking about power outages now overall this again is going to be the more impactful system for the northeast but we look at the footprint for our late week storm and I mean so much of the country is getting in on this especially as we head into the weekend we could end up with some travel disruptions in the northeast
