The event, called 'Americana Music and Ales,' is a collaborative effort involving local breweries such as Friction Beer and the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce, with a total budget of $110,000 funded by the city's 8% transient guest tax collected from hotel stays.

Organizers aim to highlight unique American-style beers and local music, positioning Shawnee as a welcoming destination for international guests. The festival is part of a broader initiative to showcase Shawnee and the Kansas City area to the anticipated hundreds of thousands of World Cup visitors.

And as first responders work to keep everybody safe, cities like Shawnee are trying to lure people in to visit during their stay. KSHB 41 Johnson County reporter Elise Schoenig dives into what leaders are planning. In six months, Shawnee wants you and all other hundreds of thousands of anticipated visitors to know that it's ready to give you the perfect event to elevate your World Cup experience. This summer, downtown Shawnee will transform into a one-day music and beer festival extravaganza. Okay, obviously come June 20th, you won't be fighting the cold in your winter jacket like I am. Come on, let's take a look at how we got here. Eddie Crane says this started with a vision. If you are English as a second language, or not at all, in the title, it describes what it is. You know, Americana music and ales, music and beer. This is where all the magic happens. We're creating a wort that's going in here. We'll do 10 barrels of that. Nathan Ryerson is one of Friction Beer's owners. We try and always have some English styles, but like, how can we appeal to people, show them some very unique American-style beers that they may not get to experience other places? We are a big soccer bar. We hosted the Euros last year, and we were England's watch party location. Yeah! The Shawnee Chamber of Commerce is also part of this collaboration. We are using funds from the guest tax that guests to the city that stay in our hotels pay, and that fund is helping to offset some of the cost of putting on the festival. Let's unpack that. So, let's say you've got a short-term stay at a hotel here. As part of your stay, you're paying a guest tax at a rate of 8%. That money goes to the city's transient guest tax fund. The Shawnee Chamber of Commerce is using money from that fund to pay for Americana and ales. The total event budget is $110,000. Let's show them what Kansas City can do, but more locally, what Shawnee does. So, with six months to go until the main event, and hopefully the warmer weather that will come with it, Shawnee wants you to know that it's ready to welcome the world.
