Severe storms are expected in various parts of the U.S. during the Fourth of July travel weekend. CBS News' Kris Van Cleave has the latest on the weather and travel plans.

Severe storms are anticipated to affect various regions of the United States during the Fourth of July travel period, with particular concern for the East Coast. AAA projects that over 72 million people will travel during the holiday, including more than 61 million by car and nearly 6 million by air, marking increases from the previous year.

Airports along the East Coast have already experienced delays and cancellations due to storms, and further disruptions are expected, especially from Washington, D.C. to Boston. While early flights are less likely to be affected, travelers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for potential delays, especially during afternoon and evening hours when traffic and weather issues are most likely.

All right, as you probably know, tomorrow is the 4th of July and severe storms are causing trouble for some travelers all across the country. Now, AAA is projecting more than 72 million people will travel at some point over this upcoming holiday weekend. Perhaps you're heading out right now. More than 61 million people are expected to travel by car, which is up 1.3 million over last year. Air travel is predicted to rise more than 1% to nearly 6 million people. The bottom line, everybody's on the go. CBS News senior transportation correspondent Chris Van Cleve is among them. He joins us now from LAX there out in Los Angeles. Good morning to you, Chris. I was able to get back from my flight from an undisclosed location back into the country yesterday, but I know not everyone is so lucky. So how are some storms impacting travel so far? You picked a good day to travel yesterday. The airline's got a break from the weather that's just been hammering airports up and down the East Coast, causing delays and cancellations. Now, this morning is going to start off pretty nicely for the airlines. The point of concern, think about 2 p.m. into the evening as you go up and down the East Coast as thunderstorms are likely to kick up, particularly from about D.C. north to Boston, that same area that's just been hammered day after day over the last week or so. That remains a concern, but it's a fairly fast moving system, so we're thinking delays probably today, not necessarily a mass cancellation event for folks. The people that showed up here to LAX very early this morning, they're taking those first flights of the day, should be in pretty good shape. So far, the day looks pretty good until we get into whenever those thunderstorms set up. And Chris, you have always, you know, said and shared that you want to be like the folks showing up at LAX right now. Get the first flights out of the day in case there are hiccups. What other types of travel tips do you think people can take now that they are on the go? Yeah, so certainly leave yourself enough time at the airport to navigate a crowd if you hit it. Today will be a busy day. Sunday will be busier, so on your way back, that's certainly a day where you want to give yourself some cushion. But also, you know, as you're driving, AAA expects this afternoon and evening and Sunday afternoon and evening to be the busiest time on the roads. But generally, through this holiday stretch, the afternoon and evening are when you're going to run into more people on the roads going to 4th of July events coming and going.
