A powerful and unexpected storm hit Port Pirie, South Australia, bringing heavy rain, large hailstones, and winds reaching up to 119 kilometres per hour. The event, which was not forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology, resulted in flooding, significant property damage, and widespread power outages.

Emergency services received approximately 350 calls for assistance, with over 160 SES personnel deployed for recovery efforts. More than 4,000 residents were left without power after over 50 power lines were brought down, and officials described the damage as the most significant storm event on record for the region.

Hail. Oh, power's gone off. Walls shook as winds reached up to 119 kilometres an hour, spiking at around 8.30 last night, taking everyone by surprise. Mother Nature can be very unpredictable. This was not forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology. It would have been close to almost like a cyclone. I've seen people's roofs come off. I've seen tiles. People's roofs have flown over, over the fence. There's trees down on the fences. Community crews were hit with about 350 calls for help, with 40 still outstanding. This is the most significant storm event that we've had in the Port Pirie region on record. Over 160 SES personnel have been deployed to aid with recovery and clean up. These two homes that have suffered more consequential damage. We'll link up with government services to ensure that we have relief housing for them. As for power, 4,000 residents are still in the dark, with over 50 power lines in town brought down in the space of an hour. These are the kinds of figures and level of damage that you would expect to see on the network at a state-wide level. It could take a day or two for power to come back on.
