Lawmakers are returning to Washington with a major to-do item to prevent yet another government shutdown. If Congress can't reach an agreement, funding for several key departments will run out. Senate Minority Leader McConnell says Government will not shutdown

with only a few days before Friday. There's still no clear path on if and how lawmakers will come to an agreement. Talks on a compromise fell through yesterday. Tomorrow, President Biden is meeting with top four congressional leaders to discuss funding. Congressional correspondent Nathaniel Reid joins us live from Capitol Hill. So, Nate, Congress managed to avoid a shutdown for the past several months with these last minute agreements. What's your sense on this deadline and the issues that are holding up a deal? Well, a little bit of last minute scrambling on Capitol Hill in the last couple minutes, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell emerging from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's office. They're having talks up here on the Hill. Senate Minority Leader McConnell telling me just a couple of minutes ago he believes that Republicans are not going to shut the government down. I asked him if he was anticipating a government shutdown if he expects when he responded. No, we're not going to shut the government down. So at this point, Leader McConnell saying that at the same time, this high profile battle between Speaker Johnson and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer playing out in the press over the weekend, Leader Schumer releasing a dear colleague letter to Senate Democrats saying, quote, Well, we'd hope to have legislation ready this weekend that would give us ample time for members to review the text. It is now clear that House Republicans need more time to sort themselves out. Speaker Johnson responding in a statement, quote, Leader Schumer's letter fails to mention that many of the points still being debated come from new Democrat demands that were not previously included in the Senate's bill. So those two fighting in the public press at the same time we're headed toward that Friday deadline for the government to either reach a funding solution or risk a partial government shutdown. This is a two tiered funding battle that we're fighting there. The first government shutdown deadline is this Friday, March 1st, the second a week from Friday on March 8th. During those times, some of the government would shut down, including parts of the agriculture funding. The FDA money for food stamps could potentially be affected. Additionally, transportation, housing and urban development that could be affected as well. That could mean everything from issues with seeking transportation, having difficulty hiring new air traffic controllers could be something that results from a partial government shutdown this weekend. There's a lot of examples of how a government shutdown could hurt the American people and plunge the U. S. Further into debt at the same time, even though Mitch McConnell told me just a couple of minutes ago, he does not anticipate a shutdown. It's really hard to see what the off ramp is here between Speaker Johnson and Senate Democrats.
