An 11-year-old boy narrowly escaped a shark attack at Dee Why beach in New South Wales, Australia, after a bull shark bit into his surfboard while he was in the water with his family. The incident occurred around midday when the beach was already closed due to rough surf conditions. 

Authorities, including Surf Life Saving, responded by searching the area and deploying a drone for surveillance. The event took place near the site of a previous shark attack in September of the previous year, highlighting ongoing concerns about shark activity and the effectiveness of local shark nets.

The beach was already closed because of rough surf conditions when the 11-year-old was down here at Dewy Point with his family when this terrifying encounter happened just around midday. Here's what locals had to say. A bull shark came from underneath and took a big chunk out of his board. So yeah, luckily his dad was there to sort of calm him and everyone sort of rushed towards him and then saw if he was okay and then they got out of the water as soon as possible. This of course has happened where surfer Mercury Salachus was mauled by a great white shark in September last year. We know that there are shark nets about 150 metres long about 500 metres offshore but there are gaps above and below it, meaning marine life can swim above and below it. But understandably tonight this boy is feeling very rattled. He certainly would be. Thank you, Liv.
