A second man has been charged with numerous child sexual offences in Victoria, prompting the State Government to order an urgent review of the sector.

A 36-year-old man from Hoppers Crossing, Michael Simon Wilson, has been charged with 45 offences including child rape, possession of child abuse material, and bestiality. Authorities have clarified that these charges are not related to any childcare centres and are not connected to the eight alleged victims of former childcare worker Joshua Brown, though the two men are known to each other.

In response, the Victorian government has announced new safety measures for childcare centres, including a mandatory ban on smartphones and an urgent review into childcare safety, which may involve installing security cameras. These actions come amid calls for a national inquiry and criticism of the current working with children check system, with industry representatives urging more robust safeguards.

As Victorians grapple with the aftermath of an alleged childcare predator, another man is charged with dozens of child sexual offences. The accused, 36-year-old Michael Simon Wilson of Hoppers Crossing, facing 45 charges including child rape, possession of child abuse material and bestiality. It comes as Premier Jacinta Allen vows Victoria will go it alone to strengthen a failing system. His families need to know that they can continue to trust placing their children in childcare settings. New measures will be imposed including a ban on smartphones. Phone bans exist voluntarily at a federal level but will be mandated in Victoria from September 26. If centres breach the ban they face fines of $50,000. We will also commission here in Victoria an urgent review into childcare safety. Which will include the prospect of security cameras in centres. Police say it makes a difference in at the very least deterring and then assisting in identifying. Experts are calling for a national inquiry. This is not the first time it's happened and it won't be the last unless we act urgently to strengthen the child safeguarding measures. State and federal education ministers met last week. It's taken too long to do the work necessary to make sure that our working with children check system is up to scratch. Industry says the system needs to be more robust especially when red flags like working at dozens of centres present themselves.
