Mary Bronkow, a senior program manager at Seattle's Institute for Systems Biology, has been named one of three recipients of the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Alongside Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi, Bronkow was recognized for research into peripheral immune tolerance, a discovery that has shaped the medical field’s understanding of how the immune system distinguishes between attacking harmful microbes and protecting the body’s own tissues.

Their work, which began with key findings in 1995, has been pivotal in advancing knowledge about autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes and lupus. The laureates' discoveries are also being used to develop improved treatments for diseases, enhance organ transplant outcomes, and bolster cancer therapies. The trio will share a prize of nearly $1.2 million.

The 2025 Nobel Prize announcements kicked off Monday after three scientists, two in the U.S. and one in Japan, won the Medicine Prize for their work on peripheral immune tolerance. This year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine relates to how we keep our immune system under control so we can fight all imaginable microbes. The discoveries by Mary E. Bronkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi helped the medical field grasp how the immune system attacks germs while also avoiding harm to our own bodies. The laureate's work dates back to 1995 when Sakaguchi made the first key discovery from his research on mice. By winning the prize, I hope this research field develops further and be applied in a critical setting. Medical experts have commended their findings, calling it critical to understanding autoimmune diseases better, including type 1 diabetes and lupus. Immune regulation is incredibly important to study because our immune system is designed to prevent us from being attacked by pathogens, but at the same time it can attack us in the form of arthritis, multiple sclerosis. Researchers are using the laureate's data to find enhanced treatment for diseases, improve organ transplant success, and strengthen the body's fight against cancer. I don't know what else to say at this point. It's still, you know, I'm sure it hasn't quite hit me yet. Well the trio will share the reward of almost 1.2 million dollars.
