The Salt Lake Roller Derby tells me they're in a contract with their landlord, and that each year, each party can decide whether or not they want to renew or cancel that lease. But their landlord canceled their lease back in October, and now they're scrambling, hoping the community can help. The sound of drills and skates can be heard from the Derby Depot. And each person inside seems to have a reason for being there. I was a gay kid living in a red state. I didn't have a lot of options. I've always been a very athletic kid. I just didn't really have a sport I super fit into. I don't know many, like, mom-kid duos that hang out as much as we do. But if there's a common theme, it's how accepting the sport is. Roller Derby is meant to be a place where everyone can be here. But that safe space may be coming to a close after they found out their landlord will be ending their lease come June. I've spent hours upon hours in this facility. I've helped get it to where it is today, and so it's kind of like losing a second home. Their landlord, Fleck, said in a statement the goal is to expand their business, to keep up with growing demand, and recognize that the timing may be challenging during their season. But the main issue has been relocating. We have a limited amount of income to pay rent with, and with space requirements like this where we can't have pillars in the middle. But they're hoping the community can help. Donors to help support finding a new space, people who know of spaces and let us know. Whatever it's going to take, we're just looking for someone to help us find a new home. But coach Lindsey Stark says for now, the show must go on. We're still planning a season as normal because that's the only way we will make the revenue to fund a new space. Whether we find a beautiful new home or not, we're always going to continue to keep skating.
