Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva received a four-year doping ban on Monday. The move effectively strips the Russian Olympic Committee of its gold medal in the team event at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games. In its long-awaited ruling, the Court of Arbitration for Sport said the ban is backdated to start on 25 December 2021 and voided all of Valieva's competitive results achieved since then. The World Anti-Doping Agency, or WADA, one of the parties that brought the case to the court, welcomed the ruling as a win for clean sport. Director-General Olivier Nigli. It's been a frustrating wait for the other competitors, who are still waiting for their medals from the event to be allocated. At the time, the United States took silver behind the Russians, with Japan winning bronze and Canada placing fourth. Valieva was 15 when she tested positive for a banned substance that prevents angina in late 2021. Her team had argued there may have been a mix-up with her grandfather's medication. On Monday, WADA's president also urged governments to make it a criminal offence to give performance-enhancing drugs to minors. Saying in a statement, anyone who dopes children should be in prison. Russian athletes already faced scrutiny at the 2022 Games over separate doping sanctions. They competed in Beijing without a flag or national anthem as punishment for tampering with lab data that could have identified drug cheats. Russia has denied running a state-sponsored doping programme. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed Monday's ruling as politically motivated, while the Russian Olympic Committee said in a statement, quote, in effect, war has been declared on Russian sport.
