US Senator Marco Rubio has called for the establishment of an international force to help maintain the ceasefire in Gaza, as US troops currently monitor the situation from a new coordination centre in southern Israel. The ceasefire remains fragile, with recent violence threatening its stability and doubts persisting over whether Hamas will disarm and whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will uphold the agreement.

The visit by Rubio coincides with diplomatic efforts to advance President Trump's 20-point peace plan, aimed at fostering stability and economic development in Gaza. Humanitarian aid is reaching the region, but reconstruction costs are estimated by the UN to exceed $70 billion. Local officials, including Gaza City's mayor, report limited communication from the US regarding future governance and rebuilding plans.

The Secretary of State visited a new coordination centre in southern Israel yesterday, where around 200 US troops are monitoring the fragile ceasefire in Gaza. There's going to be ups and downs and twists and turns, but I think we have a lot of reason for healthy optimism. But a deadly flare-up in Gaza this past Sunday threatened to derail the truce. Many are sceptical that Hamas will ever hand over its weapons. And some in Israel are not convinced that their leader, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, will stick to the ceasefire agreement. This is a circle of trust and partnership. Rubio's visit comes in the same week as the Vice President, as well as the President's negotiators, his son-in-law Jared Kushner and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. All of them pushing to move ahead with President Trump's 20-point peace plan, which imagines a safe and prosperous Gaza Strip. Food and fuel aid is now getting into Gaza. But after two years of bombardment by Israel, the UN estimates it'll cost over $70 billion to reconstruct. The peace plan doesn't say where that will come from, but talks about a Trump economic development plan to rebuild and energize Gaza. Dr Yahya al-Sarraj is the mayor of Gaza City and kept working throughout the war. He was appointed by Hamas but says he has no affiliation with the group. He told CBS News that no one from the US government has contacted him about the future. To be also frank, we didn't receive first-hand information from anybody about what is going on or who will be governing what.
