The rapid support forces (RSF) have taken full control of al-Fasher, the last city in Darfur previously held by the Sudanese armed forces. The withdrawal of government troops followed months of siege and reports of widespread violence against civilians, including killings and detentions by RSF fighters.

Medical groups and the UN Human Rights Office have documented civilian deaths and multiple reports of atrocities, including executions. With al-Fasher's capture, the RSF now controls all state capitals in Darfur, raising concerns about the safety of civilians and the potential for further ethnic violence and possible partitioning of Sudan.

RSF expands control in western Sudan

It's a turning point in Sudan's civil war. On Monday, the Sudanese armed forces admitted they had withdrawn from al-Fasher, leaving the city under the control of the rapid support forces. Everyone has followed what happened in al-Fasher. The leadership there, including security, made assessments that they have to leave the city due to the systematic destruction and killing of civilians. Al-Fasher was the last stronghold of the Sudanese armed forces in Darfur. After it was besieged for 18 months by the rapid support forces, footage posted on social media since Sunday showed the group's fighters celebrating at the site of a former Sudanese military base. Other footage showed RSF fighters shooting, beating and detaining people as they took the city. Medical groups reported civilians were killed in the violent takeover. In a statement, the UN Human Rights Office said it had received multiple reports of atrocities committed by the RSF, including executions. The risk of further large-scale, ethnically-motivated violations and atrocities in al-Fasher is mounting by the day. Concrete action needs to be taken urgently to ensure the protection of civilians in al-Fasher and safe passage for those trying to reach relative safety. With the recent capture of al-Fasher, the RSF now controls all the state capitals in the Darfur region, which experts say could raise the possibility of a partitioning of Sudan.
