Romania and Bulgaria join Europe’s Schengen travel zone

As the clock struck midnight on Sunday, the Schengen zone received two new members, Bulgaria and Romania. After a 13-year wait, their citizens will now be able to travel through Europe's vast Schengen area of free movement by air and sea, without border checks. Albeit with a caveat. The status does not apply to land routes, after Austria initially blocked their ascension, citing concerns about an influx of illegal immigrants. Ultimately, they reached an agreement in principle with the two fellow European Union members, in what the EU's chief has said is a great success for Romania and Bulgaria. It's a historic moment for the Schengen area, the largest area of free movement in the world. Together, we are building a stronger, more united Europe for all our citizens. The Schengen area, which was established in 1985, is now comprised of 29 countries, including 25 out of the 27 EU members, along with Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. But while the move is symbolically significant, many citizens would prefer it applied to the roads, like these weary bus drivers who have been queuing for hours at Bulgaria's border with Romania over the Danube, trying to cross on their way to Western Europe. I've been here since yesterday. I had hoped to cross today, but frankly, I doubt it will happen. Many feel the partial Schengen membership will not make their lives any easier. However, both countries hope they will be fully integrated into the Schengen area by the end of the year.
