Veteran Franco-Polish filmmaker Roman Polanski went on trial in France on Tuesday over allegations he defamed a British actress who accused him of sexual abuse in the 1980s. The 90-year-old is wanted in the United States over the rape of a 13-year-old in 1977 and faces several other accusations of sexual assault dating back decades and past the statute of limitations, all claims he has rejected.

In a 2019 conversation with French publication Paris Match, Polanski characterised Lewis' allegation a heinous lie. He even pulled out a British tabloid from 1999 where Charlotte Lewis was quoted as saying she was fascinated by the filmmaker and wanted to be his lover. Lewis went on to file a defamation suit after claiming the quotes attributed to her were inaccurate. 90-year-old Polanski, who's wanted in the United States over the rape of a teenager, won't attend Tuesday's proceedings. The defamation trial comes just days after French actress Judith Godrej testified at a Senate hearing denouncing an incestuous film industry in France which she said operated with impunity.
