Robert F. Kennedy Jr., during his confirmation hearings, expressed support for vaccines and the established childhood immunization schedule, emphasizing the need for robust scientific evidence. Despite this, his administration's first report called for a reassessment of the childhood vaccine schedule and more research into vaccine side effects, as well as increased dialogue about vaccine risks and benefits.

Subsequent actions included ending recommendations for COVID-19 vaccines for healthy children and pregnant women, dismissing all members of the CDC's Independent Vaccine Advisory Board due to alleged conflicts of interest, and replacing them with vaccine critics. Kennedy also canceled 22 contracts for mRNA-based vaccines, despite expert consensus on their effectiveness and potential for rapid pandemic response.

During his confirmation hearings, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said he would uphold one of public health's greatest successes. I support vaccines. I support the childhood schedule. I will do that. The only thing I want is good science, and that's it. But here's the thing. Good science, over several decades, many countries, hundreds of thousands of people, does exist. And it overwhelmingly supports the safety and efficacy of vaccines. Still, the first report from the Make America Healthy Again Commission recommended a, quote, reassessment of the childhood vaccine schedule, specifically calling for more research into potential adverse effects of vaccination and pushing for more open dialogue around risks and benefits of vaccines. In May, Kennedy announced that COVID shots would no longer be recommended for healthy children and pregnant women. Keep in mind that newborns and pregnant women are among the most vulnerable people to infection. In June, he dismissed all members of the CDC's Independent Vaccine Advisory Board, known as ACIP. This group makes recommendations on who should give vaccines and when. RFK Jr. claimed that the advisers had conflicts of interest. Now, advisers had already been required to publicly disclose any potential conflicts of interest at the beginning of every meeting and abstained for deliberations in which those conflicts were known. Instead, he replaced them with known vaccine critics. Other independent advisers who have traditionally helped interpret new vaccine studies have now also been sidelined. Most recently, he's canceled 22 contracts for mRNA technology-based vaccines, despite plenty of evidence showing that these vaccines are effective at preventing severe disease and death, especially in vulnerable populations. Many experts also believe that mRNA technology could be used to quickly develop new vaccines if necessary, meaning in months instead of years, which would be critically important if and when we face another pandemic.
