These organizations coordinate efforts to search for and rescue animals, provide medical care, and collect supplies. Their work not only saves animals but also helps maintain the bond between pets and their owners, offering comfort and stability to families impacted by severe weather events.

Rescuing pets after disaster: How animal groups step in to help

As flames tore through neighborhoods in California earlier this year, families had only minutes to evacuate, and in many cases, pets were left behind. Organizations like the Pasadena Humane Society stepped in to provide immediate care. We have dogs in what would normally be our behavior and training room. Chickens in an area that we had been using for wildlife. It's just that kind of moving pieces around and just making sure that all the animals were getting the care they needed. In July, when catastrophic flooding swept through central Texas, Austin Pets Alive responded quickly, first by preparing their own facilities to handle an influx of animals. The second thing is try to determine what's happening for the pets that are impacted directly by a disaster. We set up a daily presence of veterinarians to go down to the region and just be there all day. And then the third thing that we did is start collecting supplies here in Austin. On the ground, search and rescue teams faced tough conditions trying to find animals hidden in debris. The hardest part is just trying to get through all the debris, find a place that's safe to put down a cat trap, or even locate animals within all the debris. This kind of coordinated response happens after all kinds of disasters. Following hurricanes, teams bring in mobile vet units, field shelters, and more, doing everything they can to treat injured pets and reunite them with their families. I think that speaks to how important pets are to family and how critical it is that we consider them in disasters. These organizations don't just save animals.
