During the hearing, the prosecution made it clear there would be no plea deal and submitted 95 sealed exhibits due to their graphic nature. Testimony from law enforcement detailed the circumstances leading to Rebekah's death, while her maternal grandparents expressed their grief and called for accountability. Both defendants are scheduled for arraignment, and a decision on whether their cases will be heard together is pending.

Rebekah Baptiste case heads to court in Apache County

The couple accused in the death of a 10 year old girl back in court today, Rebecca Baptiste, father and his girlfriend now facing first degree murder charges. Police say Rebecca suffered extreme abuse at their hands and ended up dead after being found unconscious along a dirt road in Navajo County. Fox 10. Kenzie Beach was inside the hearing today. She joins us live from Apache County with the very latest Kenzie. Yeah, john. Christina, the state has made it very clear there was no intent to enter a plea deal in this case. Instead, they added two additional charges today. A judge finding probable cause to charge Richard Baptiste and Anissia Woods with first degree murder, two counts of child abuse in two counts of child molestation. The deputy, the lead deputy, um, an agent, he's with the Apache County Sheriff's office. He gave very detailed, lengthy testimony, taking the witness stand for 2.5 to almost three hours today, detailing everything that led up to Rebecca's death. And for anyone in that courtroom today, it was hard to hear Richard Baptiste and Anissia Woods entered this courtroom one after the other, both in shackles, Richard in an orange jumpsuit, Anissia in a red stripe jumpsuit, both provided by the Apache County Jail, both of them completely stoic at times hanging their heads. Anissia Woods even covering her face with her hair as if she didn't want to be seen. The state submitting 95 exhibits which have been sealed due to the graphic nature. They include photos of Rebecca's condition when she arrived to the hospital, her body covered in bruises from head to toe. Doctors describing what Rebecca endured is torture. The lead case agent, Deputy Cole Soderquist, detailed the living conditions in the family's remote, desolate yurt style tent. The floor covered in animal feces and trash where Rebecca was forced to sleep on a chair cushion on the floor as a form of punishment. We spoke to Rebecca's maternal grandparents for the first time today, the two holding back tears in this courtroom and clenching the rosary as they had to hear the gruesome details of what Rebecca went through. I'm hurt. I'm mad. I want justice and accountability, not only for Richard and Anissia, but DCS as well. There's too many complaints and they did absolutely nothing and that needs to change. It's difficult, you know, I mean, how can, how can you say anything other than having a child who's presumably been very badly injured and killed? Um, that does this that young, it's very difficult, you know, and uh, but I try to and I think hope we keep that separated as that did happen. But who did it has not been demonstrated yet. Right before today's hearing started, the state entered a motion for joined her to hear these cases together. That decision will be made down the road. Both Richard Baptiste and Anissia Woods will be arraigned on monday september eight.
