The Liberal National Party (LNP) government in Queensland has won the Hinchinbrook by-election, marking the first instance in 27 years that a sitting state government has gained a seat it did not previously hold. David Chrisafulli secured the seat with a 16% swing, aided by preferences from One Nation, while the Labor Party's primary vote dropped to just 5%, a significant decline.

The campaign was marked by a focus on youth crime and controversy over candidate affiliations. In response to the result, the Labor Party has committed to reviewing its policies and reaffirmed its support for leader Stephen Miles, with the caucus scheduled to meet in the coming week.

I intend to work hard and deliver for a community that I love. A 16% swing in favour of the LNP government, changing the colour of the map in Catacountry. Chiesa country's got a good ring to it. And delivering David Chrisafulli the seat of Hinchinbrook, and with it his hometown of Ingham. It's not about me. I just make the reflection that historically there are swings against governments in by-elections. The campaign was dominated by youth crime, and claims the Cadders Australian Party were running a Labor candidate in disguise due to previous ties with the ALP. I've been working in polling booths since I was seven years old and I haven't seen anything close to as dirty a campaign as that. David Chrisafulli threw everything at winning this by-election and has been ultimately successful off the back of those One Nation preferences. The Labor Party only secured 5% of the primary vote, sliding by 9% in just over a year. What I heard from people in Hinchinbrook, including many Labor voters, is that they saw this as a contest between the LNP and Cadders Australia Party. I'm not sure I've seen a Labor Party vote in the single digits, so that's something for them to reflect on. The Labor Party has promised to reassess all of its policies before the next election, and MPs have vowed to stand by leader Stephen Miles. Stephen Miles has 100% support of the caucus.
