This move, according to Russian officials, was a reaction to provocations from the West, including remarks by the UK's Foreign Secretary advocating for Ukraine's right to use British-supplied weapons for strikes inside Russia. Despite these tensions, Putin stated Russia's openness to dialogue with Western states, contingent upon mutual respect and equality.

Canada was among several countries that chose to boycott the inauguration ceremony. The Russian military, according to reports, has been making advances on the battlefield in eastern Ukraine and is anticipated to initiate an offensive later in the season. However, domestically, the Kremlin faces opposition, notably from women demanding an end to the war and the return of men mobilized to fight.

Amidst this backdrop, dissenters like Polina Safronova and Maria Semenova, who voted against Putin, have taken to social media to voice opposition to the war and the conscription of their loved ones. Despite their efforts, there appears to be no immediate prospect for negotiation between Russia and Ukraine. A peace summit requested by Ukraine is scheduled to be hosted by Switzerland, but Russia has not been invited to participate in the discussions.
