What do we want? When do we want it? Overnight through that freezing rain, hundreds marched peacefully through Minneapolis, denouncing ice. The anger over Renee Good's shooting Wednesday now boiling over. Just now, this crowd of several hundred people has crossed the street. On Thursday morning, we followed hundreds of demonstrators outside the Whipple Federal Building, where local ICE agents are headquartered. The crowd included mothers, grandmothers, workers, and newcomers. And in the crowd, we spotted Patrick, who says he has a son in the military and doesn't typically protest. So even though you support the country and you support the military, you're ashamed of what happened yesterday? Absolutely, I'm ashamed of ICE. I think it's extremely un-American. Once demonstrators reached the edge of the property, a skirmish line of federal agents began to build. Within minutes, officers trying to push them back sprayed the ground and then the crowd with pepper balls. Right now, somebody threw a snowball, and these Border Patrol officers are surging into the crowd. Shouting turned to shoving. We just got pepper balled, but we're trying to break through the crowd to get back to the federal building, which they just did. At one point, protesters sat on the road, refusing to disperse, agents hauling them away. They just dragged a woman, basically on her front, on her face, across the street to the other side there. What did you think when they surged into the crowd and detained those people? I really hope that both sides of us can be peaceful and not resort to this intimidation stuff. As an American, I have a right to protest. They have a right to uphold the law. For CBS Mornings, I'm Matt Gutman in Minneapolis.
