The situation in Ukraine remains tense as American policy shifted significantly over the past year, including a brief suspension of weapons and intelligence support following a contentious meeting between President Zelensky and US officials. Although relations between President Trump and Zelensky were later repaired and discussions of a new peace plan took place, concerns persist about the implications of proposed territorial concessions to Russia.

Ukrainians, including military veterans and mental health professionals, have expressed a strong desire for the war to end but fear that ceding territory could embolden Russia. The European Union recently approved a substantial loan to support Ukraine, but with Russian forces maintaining an advantage on the battlefield, the path to peace remains uncertain.

Prospects for peace in Ukraine

As we mentioned, we want to give you a look ahead to matters lingering from the year that just ended. We begin with Holly Williams and the war in Ukraine. You're right now not in a very good position. This past year, American policy on Ukraine was turned on its head. You're not in a good position. You don't have the cards right now. With us, you start having cards, but right now you don't have your playing cards. At a contentious meeting at the White House in February, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky was publicly castigated. Offer some words of appreciation for the United States of America and the President who's trying to save your country. Please, you think that if you will speak very loudly about the war you can... He's not speaking loudly. He's not speaking loudly. Your country is in big trouble. Can I answer? No, no. After that, the US briefly suspended its deliveries of weapons and intelligence sharing with Ukraine. President Trump's relationship with Zelensky was later patched up. And in Florida last weekend, the two even said they were getting closer to agreeing on a new peace plan. I do think we're getting a lot closer. Yet in his efforts to end the war in Ukraine, the President's also been accused of giving Vladimir Putin legitimacy, rolling out the red carpet for him in Alaska in August. At the same time, Trump has pressured Ukraine to give up territory to Russia in return for a ceasefire. Every Ukrainian we've spoken to desperately wants this war to stop. But many here are also worried that handing over parts of their country to Russia, as proposed by President Trump, will only serve as a reward and an encouragement to Vladimir Putin. In December, we visited the Unbroken Mental Health Clinic in Western Ukraine, where they treat military veterans for conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder. Dr. Oleg Bereziuk is the clinic's director. What would you like Americans to understand about this war and its impact on Ukrainians? This is the war for freedom. And people who are free people and want to have freedom, freedom for our children. We are truly asking, please help. Next time we will help you. Just before Christmas, the European Union agreed on a new loan to Ukraine, over $100 billion to keep funding the war effort. But the man with the real power to end the war is Vladimir Putin. These forces have the upper hand on the battlefield. And despite estimates of over a million Russian casualties, he may not be ready to make a compromise to end the bloodshed.

A day after the U.S. raid in Venezuela that captured former President Nicolás Maduro, President Trump has put new Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez on notice. "If she doesn't do what's right", Trump told the Atlantic on Sunday, "she is going to pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro."
