It's being sent to vulnerable people in Zimbabwe already struggling with a high cost of living that's been worsened by weeks of drought. The crops in the fields are not looking good. Many people may not harvest anything. Prices are going up, I have children to feed. People living in urban areas who can't afford to buy what they need are being given $13 a month. Whatever happens in the rural areas, for example there is no grain in the communities, what it means is that the price of that grain will obviously go up and when the price of that grain goes up it also affects the communities that are in the urban areas because they have to find money to be able to purchase. In many rural communities, hopes of a good harvest are fading. This is maize meal, a staple food in Zimbabwe. Maize seeds are ground into a powder or flour. A bad harvest will mean food shortages and price increases. The government says there are enough supplies of maize to last until next year's harvest but politicians are also urging people to conserve food. And with no rain at all falling in some areas, the UN says they are likely to face severe food shortages this year.
