The Prince William County School Board held a meeting this evening to discuss the county's transgender bathroom policies.

The Prince William County school board is meeting privately with its attorneys to review its transgender student bathroom policy following a Department of Education finding that the district is in violation of Title IX. The Department warned that failure to change the policy could result in serious consequences, including referral to the Justice Department.

The issue follows a federal appeals court ruling allowing transgender students to use restrooms consistent with their gender identity and a recent executive order directing the Department of Education to block federal funds to schools supporting transgender students. Community members, including parents and students, have gathered outside the meeting to voice their opinions, while the district maintains it believes it is in compliance with the law.

Now, a school board meeting is getting underway in Prince William County over transgender student bathroom policies. The education department claimed the district is in violation of Title IX and could face serious consequences, including being referred to the Justice Department. Fox 5's Sydney Persing live in Manassas tonight with the latest. Sydney. Yeah, well, first, I just want to give you a look behind me. You can see there are several people out here, parents, students, folks who live in the county, out here with signs, hoping to convince the board not to change their policy. That meeting, we understand, started just a couple of minutes ago. There aren't a ton of details available, but what we do know is that those board members are going to meet privately with their attorneys tonight to walk through all of this after those threats. So just some brief background for you. Several years ago, a Virginia-based federal appeals court ruled that transgender students are allowed to use restrooms consistent with their gender identity. But in January of this year, President Trump signed an executive order which called on the Department of Education to block federal funds to schools that support students who identify as transgender. And then in February, a conservative group filed a complaint with the DOE against five northern Virginia school districts over their bathroom policies, including here in Prince William County. Then just about two weeks ago, that is when the DOE said that its Office for Civil Rights found that those five districts were in fact in violation of Title IX as a result of those policies. If districts don't voluntarily change them, they could risk consequences, including referral to the DOJ, as you mentioned. Again, there are several folks out here tonight who you just saw who spoke with us just a couple of minutes ago. Take a listen. My concern is that it's not only bad for these kids to have an institutional exclusion, but it's bad for all kids. It's not good for kids to be in a school setting where some of their peers are actively excluded. Whether they're kids with disabilities or immigrant kids or trans kids, it doesn't matter. Inclusion, inclusion is always the best choice. Now, the school district here has said previously it does believe that they are in compliance with the law, but they're going to conduct a thorough review all of this again, that meeting with its attorneys. That's a private meeting, but we are out here tonight. We'll be trying to get more information for you about what happens behind those closed doors and also more reaction as this continues to unfold.
