East Coast of the United States

Meteorologists from AccuWeather are closely monitoring a tropical wave currently near Hispaniola, which is expected to move into favorable conditions for development as it approaches the Bahamas. The system, likely to be named Imelda, could intensify due to warm ocean waters and low wind shear, potentially impacting areas from Florida to the Carolinas.

The forecast is complicated by the presence of another hurricane, Umberto, to the east. Depending on how the two systems interact, Imelda could either be absorbed and move out to sea or strengthen and threaten the US East Coast, particularly the Carolinas. Experts advise residents along the coast to monitor updates closely as the situation evolves.

Potential East Coast impacts next week

Joining us right now is AccuWeather lead hurricane expert Alex DeSilva. You know, Alex, it was remember you and I 10 days ago, we were like, you know what? And I like what you said. The tropical wave that was just forgotten about would go incognito for a few days only to reappear. And we said, hey, listen, if this couldn't overcome the challenges, then it's got a shot to develop one more hurdle with this today. Yeah, it's dealing with land right now, but once it gets free of Hispaniola later on today and tonight, it's going to be in an area of very favorable conditions for development. The waters are warm, the lowering wind shear. So I think we're going to have a melda probably sometime tomorrow, I think, as it moves north of Hispaniola. That's the area that we're watching down there right now. And then the big question is, how does it interact with Umberto to the east? But look at these water temperatures, especially in the Bahamas, middle 80s, plenty of warmth to work with here. So the ocean temperatures are very warm. And look at this area of lower wind shear, where this tropical wave, future a melda, we believe, is going to be heading into. So low wind shear, plenty of warm water. That's a recipe for a storm to intensify in the Turks and Caicos and Bahamas later this weekend. Have you ever seen the National Hurricane Center fly as many flights into this as we've seen? And we're not criticizing them. We agree with their assessment. They really need to find where the center of circulation with this. You can't track it until you know exactly where it is. Yeah. And it's not only about the center of circulation, it's about the environment around the storm as well. So they have some flights that fly around the storm, sampling upper air stuff as well. So that impacts the movement of the storm. So all of this data goes into the models and hopefully by tomorrow, once this gets north of the islands, hopefully we have a little bit of a better idea about where it's going to be going. But we expect this to become a melda here in the next day or so coming through the islands. Now, right now we think whether it's a tropical storm or hurricane, it'll be off the east coast of Florida on Sunday. OK, based on that premise, Alex, let's talk about where it could go. Yeah, from there it's going to be steered to the north. You have a dip in the jet stream to the west that's going to be drawing that storm to the north. But let's not forget about Umberto to the east. This storm, this hurricane, likely to be a major hurricane this weekend, is going to have an impact on where a melda goes. So here's scenario number one. If Umberto is really strong and a melda is really weak, we will probably have a situation and this is the best case scenario for the United States. The weaker storm just gets absorbed into the stronger storm and goes safely out to sea without direct impacts to the United States. This is scenario number one. But I'm concerned that this might not be the most likely scenario because it's looking more and more likely like a melda is going to become a little bit stronger with those atmospheric conditions that favor intensification. Yeah, because, you know, if you just took a look, let's say Umberto doesn't have an impact. Let's just wipe it out for a second. The steering flow would take this right into the Carolinas. And if you look at the history of storms that are in this area, typically they go where? Carolinas between Charleston and somewhere toward the outer banks of North Carolina. So we can't rule out this scenario, but we are concerned about the Carolina coast. This is called the Fuji war effect. You see this a lot in the Pacific, Alex. Yeah, this is what would happen if the both of the storms end up probably becoming hurricanes. If they're within about 700 or 850 miles of one another, they'll actually start to dance kind of like two figure skaters. They'll start to rotate around each other and their paths might become a little more erratic. Now, this could allow the storm to the west, a melda to get forced a little bit further north towards the Carolina coast, then maybe potentially stall and then get pulled off the coast. So it's a very complex situation. And I think anyone from Florida all the way to the Carolinas needs to watch this very, very carefully, especially up into the Carolinas, because this track could be a little bit erratic. And if it slows down near or on the coast, we could be dealing with a major big time rainmaker as well. So plenty of time to watch it. But this would be early next week. So it's going to come up on us quick. So that's why it's going to be very important in the next 24 hours to follow the forecast very closely.
