The Pope also emphasized the need for churches and schools to remain safe places. According to the Christian Association of Nigeria, about 50 children kidnapped from a Catholic school have escaped and reunited with their parents. The recent abductions are part of a series of attacks by armed groups in the region.

At Sunday prayers, Catholic Pope Leo XIV called for the immediate release of 315 students kidnapped in Nigeria on Friday, as well as six Catholic priests and a Baptist pastor that were abducted in Cameroon earlier in the week. I have learned with immense sadness the news of the kidnapping of priests and faithful students in Nigeria and Cameroon. I feel deep sorrow especially for the many abducted boys and girls and their anguished families. I make a heartfelt appeal for the immediate release of the hostages and urge the competent authorities to take appropriate and timely decisions to secure their liberation. Let us pray for these brothers and sisters of ours, that churches and schools may always and everywhere remain places of safety and hope. The Christian Association of Nigeria says about 50 children kidnapped from the Catholic school have since escaped and been reunited with their parents. Friday's abduction was the latest in a wave of attacks by armed groups.
