The Pope cited United Nations data indicating that approximately 673 million people do not have enough to eat each day. He referenced several regions suffering from poverty and conflict, including Ukraine, Gaza, Haiti, Afghanistan, Mali, the Central African Republic, Yemen, and South Sudan. Pope Leo condemned the use of hunger as a weapon of war and warned against indifference, especially as UN food aid agencies face significant funding cuts.

How can we fail to remember all of those who are condemned to death and hardship in Ukraine, Gaza, Haiti, Afghanistan, Mali, the Central African Republic, Yemen, and South Sudan, to name just a few places on the planet where poverty has become the daily bread of so many of our brothers and sisters? The international community cannot look the other way. We must make their suffering our own. Leo also condemned the use of hunger as a weapon of war. The Pope gave a similar warning against indifference to hunger in his first encyclical released last week. His plea comes as UN food aid agencies face severe funding cuts from their top donors, putting key operations on the ground at risk.
