Seafood businesses report a drop in sales due to community concerns, but emphasize that rigorous quality assurance processes are in place from fisheries to retail. Authorities advise that while most seafood remains safe if properly cleaned, abalone and shellfish should still be avoided. The public is encouraged to support local fishermen and the broader seafood sector during this period.

We're used to seeing a master chef pressure test on our screens, but Peter Malinowskis has turned the heat up with his very own cooking show. We are doing homemade fish and chips as a manly recipe. With a spatula in hand and eldest daughter Sophie behind the camera, the South Australian Premier brushed off any concerns over the quality of the state's seafood amid the algal bloom crisis. I had a few people say, oh, would you eat the oysters, bloody oath, and I'll prove it to you. Not everyone a fan of the show. He's a good guy, I like him, but I think that's a little bit over the top. And despite a united government response, it seems not all ministers do agree with their boss. Unless lamb grows in the ocean, you're not going to see me. I can't help you. Seafood businesses like Angelicus Brothers say they're seeing more shoppers play it safe because of the devastating scenes on the state's beaches. There is some concern amongst the community and we have seen that with a bit of a drop off in people eating seafood, but we have extremely strict quality assurance processes right from the fishery itself right through to processing and here into the shop. We think the food safety standards in South Australia are good enough that if they're still allowed to sell it, we're still good to eat it. Concerns the $500 million industry could be wiped out if shoppers turn their backs. Authorities are reminding anglers to properly clean locally caught seafood, including fish and prawns, before eating. However, abalone and shellfish is still off limits for now. You're not going to pick up a dead fish and eat it. You get the fish that are swimming around, okay. Now's the time to get behind our fishermen and support the produce that they get for us.
