So here in Cavendish, we have 16 of these. Parks Canada's wildfire operations coordinator says with more wildfires in other parts of the country, fire crews on PEI took extra steps to prepare for this year. This hose is ready, carefully wrapped, so it's easy to unravel during an emergency. This season is shaping up to be one of those hot and dry. We're just ready to go. We have our equipment staged. It's tested, and tanks are full. We have lots of water available. Luckily, we are an island, so it's easy to find some water. The campground next door has a water tank filled to the brim. The fire pits are smaller, and crews are trimming back nearby trees and planting fire-resistant ones. She says they did scenario training too, so newer members got hands-on experience. We started a little fire, and we had our water tender on site. And our newer crews got to use the hoses and learn all of that sort of stuff. Massive wildfires are spreading in Western Canada. PEI officials say it's unlikely that would happen here. The climate is different, so is the landscape. Still, the provincial field services manager says there's always been a focus on fire safety, but it's really ramped up since post-tropical storm Fiona. We're seeing that there's been a good investment both federally, provincially, locally. And the people resources as well as financial to make sure that people are prepared. And we have the equipment. And so moving forward, we are going to have all the things we need to give the people on the ground the best opportunity to fight the fires. That includes more collaboration with volunteer departments. Some are getting extra training and special equipment like this wildland fire truck. We have five of them that are located across the island. Weather stations are being updated too. Crews now use drones at fires to get an immediate picture of the situation. And they still work with other jurisdictions in Canada during emergencies. We're looking from Western Ontario all the way into Alberta. We're seeing increased fire activity, and we're looking to help support those provinces if we can. Both say there are ways islanders can also help. For example, checking to see if there's any burning restrictions in place properly, getting rid of cigarette butts, and also using a program called Fire Smart that helps walk you through the best ways to protect your property.
