On social media, Jose Raul Molino called the destruction an unjustified, barbaric act. On Monday, the Chinese foreign ministry said it's peace. China expresses its strong dissatisfaction with the forced demolition by the relevant local government in Panama and has launched a solemn protest with the Panamanian side. The US and China are the main users of the 80-kilometre canal, which sees the passage of 5% of global maritime trade. The waterway was under US control from 1949 to 1999 when it was handed back to Panama. Trump has demanded preferential conditions for its use by US vessels. The Hong Kong-based operator of two ports at either end of the canal has agreed to sell them to a US-based consortium that includes BlackRock.
