A court in Amsterdam has ruled in favor of extraditing Palestinian journalist Mustafa Ayyash to Austria, where he is accused of helping finance Hamas. Ayyash, founder of the Gaza Now news agency, was arrested in the Netherlands on September 19th and has been detained since then. 

Ayyash's lawyers deny the allegations, arguing that the accusations lack sufficient detail, while his supporters claim he is being targeted for his journalistic work. Austrian authorities allege that donations collected by Gaza Now were used to support Hamas, which is designated as a terrorist group in the European Union. Ayyash will now face investigation on terrorism charges in Austria.

A court in Amsterdam has allowed the extradition of the Palestinian journalist Mustafa Ayyash to Austria. Ayyash is the founder of the news agency Gaza Now. He was arrested at an airport in the Netherlands on September 19th. Austria suspects him of helping finance Hamas. His lawyers have denied those allegations. Ayyash fled to Austria after some of his family members were killed during an Israeli bombing in Gaza. Steppe Vassen reports on the court's verdict from Amsterdam. Relatives and supporters of Mustafa Ayyash have come here to the court in Amsterdam to protest against his detention and arresting the founder and journalist of Gaza Now, a Palestinian news agency with nearly 2 million followers, has been in detention since September 19th. And these people here, they say he's falsely been accused of supporting, financially supporting Hamas with his news site Gaza Now, which had been asking for donations for humanitarian support. But the Austrian authorities say that he has used this money to support members of Hamas. They say here that this is a frame created by Israel to criminalize journalists and they also say this is exactly happening in Gaza with journalists there and now European nations are doing the same to Palestinian journalists here. Mustafa is an independent journalist and does not belong to any group or organization. He has been leading Gaza Now news agency since 2006. He has never answered to anyone. His lawyer had argued during this court case that there was not enough specifications, not enough details in the accusations coming from the Austrian authorities to extradite him. Mustafa Ayyash has been also in poor health in the last couple of weeks. Initially it was thought he couldn't attend the hearing but he came after all. He looked very frail and very fragile and he was at one stage very emotional. We see that a lot of Palestinian journalists are targeted by false allegations regarding Hamas or regarding terrorism. So we argued that the allegations against Mustafa Ayyash are not true. The judges decided that there is enough information in the arrest warrant to extradite Mustafa Ayyash to Austria, the country where he has been living officially since 2017 and where he now will be investigated on terrorism charges. Hamas has been declared in the whole European Union as a terrorist group and supporting a terrorist group carries a punishment in prison of up to 10 years in Austria. But people here, his relatives, his supporters all say he was only a journalist. He's been a journalist for many years since he was 15 years old and he was just doing his job.
