Two-time champion Padraig Harrington has said he will be "very nervous" to hit the opening tee shot at the 153rd Open Championship but that he does not want to be viewed as a "ceremonial golfer".

Padraig Harrington of Ireland was given the honour of teeing off first at the Open Championship and started with a birdie, energising the local crowd. Among the nine Australians competing, Cameron Smith struggled with his opening tee shot and settled for a par after a three-putt, while Lucas Herbert began his round positively with a birdie on the first hole.

Windy conditions were anticipated to make play more challenging as the day progressed. Phil Mickelson delivered an early highlight by making a par from a bunker on the third hole, earning recognition for one of the shots of the day.
