The agency estimates that a child is displaced every five seconds in the region, and every fifteen minutes, another is injured or killed. The war in Gaza has been a major driver of these statistics, with around 50,000 children reported killed or injured by the end of May. In total, nearly 110 million children are currently living in conflict-affected countries across the region, many of whom lack access to basic needs such as health care, education, and food. UNICEF has warned that the current year ranks among the worst for children living in conflict zones, as many are deprived not only of safety but also of their future prospects.

One child is displaced every five seconds in MENA region conflicts

Children's lives are under threat in the conflict zones of the Middle East and North Africa. According to UNICEF, a child is displaced through conflict every 5 seconds in the region. And every 15 minutes, another one is injured or killed. These statistics have mostly been fuelled by the war Israel has been waging in the Gaza Strip. An estimated 50,000 children in the zone were killed or injured until the end of May. And many more are displaced and face alarming rates of malnutrition, according to NGOs. UNICEF also warned that 2024 was one of the worst years ever for children living in conflict zones. In the Middle East and North Africa, nearly 110 million children currently live in countries affected by conflict. The consequences are wide-reaching. Access to health care, education or food is not guaranteed. Many of these children are not only stripped of safety, but also of their future.
