Nvidia Corp. has unveiled new chips aimed at extending the firm's dominance of artificial intelligence computing, a position that's already made it the world's third-most-valuable business. A new processor design called Blackwell is multiple times faster at handling the models that underpin AI, the company said.

The introduction of the Blackwell chips represents a significant advancement in the technology, as these processors are claimed to be several times faster at managing the complex models that are fundamental to AI technologies. This strategic move by Nvidia aims to enhance its standing in the AI market, a sector that has evidently contributed to the company becoming the third-most-valuable business globally.

This was a widely anticipated announcement and essential for the continued evolution of the company's Blackwell chip. About two and a half times more powerful than the hopper platform that it replaces. So the B100, that's going to be the new technology to replace the H100. But I think as well as the performance, the CEO is very keen to emphasize the reduced power consumption of this new platform, which obviously every corporate is incredibly sensitive now to their environmental footprint. And so be able to do much more computational processes and tasks, doing them more quickly, but doing them without being so power hungry is incredibly important, too. So I think that's an important element, too. So, yeah, I don't think anybody really heard anything they weren't expecting to hear. But, you know, there was lots of fanfare about how the world is getting more and more complex and computational driven, and that these chips they're developing are going to continue to be, you know, kind of in strong demand. And I think they probably did enough to kind of convince people that they continue to maintain a big edge over their rivals in terms of delivering these things and broadening their market. You know, their big customers are the big data center and cloud companies. And there's a lot more that goes on inside data centers than just the processing. There's connectivity between all these different computing devices, and they're getting into that market in a bigger way, too. So they're kind of expanding their addressable market into other ways, too. And it's interesting, as you say, that they're looking to address those energy concerns around AI's energy consumption. We'll see if the analysts latch on to that as well. In terms of the moat, then, that exists between NVIDIA and its competitors, have they widened that moat with this B100, with the black whale? Or is AMD and others, are they catching up? It's hard to say. My initial reaction would be maybe they've widened it a bit. But, you know, we'll just have to see what happens this year in terms of other announcements. But I think at the very least, they're definitely maintaining it. Probably one of the other interesting things we saw yesterday was, towards the end, a new robotics platform, which actually Disney is looking to use. And they actually had two kind of quite small robots that are kind of Disney-themed come on. They kind of remind me a bit of some of the small things you saw in the Star Wars movies. And so there's some kind of quite exciting things there. Maybe that's going to open up a whole new kind of debate about this robotics platform, how it's used in the enterprise and the entertainment area, too. So there's a kind of a light-hearted moment towards the end of his two-hour keynote, which maybe will kind of spark some interest from Bloomberg and others.
