One month after a Cessna plane crashed into the ocean off the Point Loma coast, the National Transportation Safety Board has released its preliminary findings, confirming what experts initially suspected.

The report indicates the pilot, Landon Baldwin, lost control of the aircraft after pulling out of a dive and re-entering the clouds, ultimately resulting in the plane's descent into the ocean.

The search for the six missing individuals was suspended after extensive efforts by the Coast Guard, who determined survival was unlikely. The NTSB's ongoing investigation currently prevents families from conducting private recovery operations. The pilot had expressed nervousness about flying in busy airspace but was deemed proficient in departure procedures.

And here is where that search continues. One month ago on June 9th, the Coast Guard searched the coast off Point Loma for six people missing in a plane crash. One day later, that search was suspended. I spoke with the Coast Guard and they told me they called the search off after covering 300 square miles over 35 hours, determining survival was unlikely. Here's a recording of the radio broadcast of the pilot of that Cessna, Landon Baldwin. In my first report, I spoke with a 43-year commercial pilot and instructor, Captain Robert Katz. He told me based on FlightAware's track log, he believed that Landon Baldwin became spatially disoriented. We now know that's what the NTSB's preliminary report concluded as well. On page two, they showed us a rendering of the plane going down, but was able to pull out of the dive right back up into the clouds where he loses control again and then ultimately dives into the ocean. The NTSB report also details how Baldwin expressed nervousness about the busy California airspace, but appeared to be proficient during their review of the San Diego departure procedure. Katz breaks down what likely triggered that nervousness. Flying in busy Southern California airspace with a lot of radio chatter going on, which is always distracting. A controller who was shotgunning questions. When you find yourself overwhelmed, it's easy to panic. Now, I spoke with a friend of the victim's families and learned that they have been trying to raise money to hire someone to come out here and search and retrieve the bodies from the ocean near the Point Loma coast. But I've also just learned that the NTSB has told them that as long as this crash investigation is still open, they're not going to be allowed to do so. I called the NTSB to ask where their search efforts are at the moment. I'm still waiting to hear back in the newsroom. Danny Miskel, ABC 10 News.
