Northern Territory Police have acknowledged they have a problem after a three-year coronial inquest into the death of Kumanjayi Walker found structural racism throughout the force.

A three-year inquest into the death of 19-year-old Kumanjayi Walker in Yuendumu has concluded, with family members expressing relief at finally being heard. The Northern Territory coroner found evidence of structural and entrenched racism within the NT Police, a finding that the police force has now publicly acknowledged.

Constable Zachary Rolfe, who shot Walker during a botched arrest, was acquitted of murder and manslaughter in 2022. While the coroner could not determine if racism directly caused the fatal shooting, the NT Police have committed to reviewing all 18 recommendations from the inquest and developing a future anti-racism strategy. Walker's family remains cautiously optimistic, calling for broader structural changes and community-based solutions.

For the remote desert community of Yuendumu, 300 kilometres northwest of Alice Springs, the Northern Territory's coroner findings brought clarity around the botched arrest which saw Constable Zachary Rolfe shoot the 19-year-old three times. When we heard the coroner say that there was structural and entrenched racism in the NT Police, we felt validated. She has told the truth. Constable Rolfe was acquitted of murder and manslaughter by a jury in 2022. Coroner Elizabeth Armitage is not permitted to say whether racism directly led to the fatal shooting, but Northern Territory Police today admitted racism exists in their ranks. That is confronting, but it is a truth that we must face. The force committing to reviewing all 18 recommendations from the coroner as it develops a future anti-racism strategy. It is a beginning of something far more important, lasting reform, shared respect and a police force that all Territorians can trust. But Kumunjai's family is only cautiously optimistic.
